Anna Lea Merritt was an American painter. Letters written by Anna Lea Merritt to J. E. Gawtherne of Portlaw relating to his purchase of her painting "St. Cecilia" from the Royal Academy in 1875. Also included are notes and clippings related to the painting, and a clipping reviewing two volumes written by Merritt about her late husband, English painter Henry Merritt.

Painter Anna Lea Merritt was born in Philadelphia, and showed early artistic ability. In London during a tour of Europe she met and became influenced by her future husband, Henry Merritt.
